In 2004, a Greek Orthodox
family moved from Syracuse, New York to Leesburg, Virginia, approximately 45 miles west of Washington, DC. At that time,
Loudoun County Virginia was considered the fastest growing county in the United States with a total population of about 250,000
residents and, to their dismay, had no Greek Orthodox Church.
After spending more than a year commuting to Maryland to attend the Divine Liturgy and catechetical
school, the family wondered if there were other families in Loudoun County who also felt the need to establish a local parish,
making it possible for all to participate in a Greek Orthodox community on a regular basis. In 2006, with the Loudoun
County phone book as the main resource, a campaign of "cold-calling" apparent Greek-surnamed families began in order
to determine the level of interest in establishing a local parish. By the end of June 2006, approximately 50 families
expressed interest.
With the
aid of a local Priest offering to perform Divine Liturgy service on Sunday mornings and the list of 50 interested families,
a meeting with Metropolitan Evangelos of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey was held on June 20, 2006 in order to
gain permission to proceed with worship. Metropolitan Evangelos, while encouraging and supportive of the effort that
had begun, was skeptical that a Parish could be self-sustaining and required more proof and a well-developed plan prior to
proceeding. The Metropolitan agreed to hold the first Organizational Meeting on Friday, September 22, 2006 in order
to determine the level of commitment in Loudoun County toward the establishment of a new Parish.
The first Organizational Meeting in September 2006 was nothing short of
a success. Metropolitan Evangelos was greeted with enthusiasm and financial commitment by approximately 85 families
and 225 people at Lansdown Potomac Club in Lansdowne, Virginia. This show of support, along with the presentation of
the proposed Parish's short and long term goals convinced Metropolitan Evangelos to give his ultimate show of support
by establishing The Greek Orthodox Parish of Loudoun County, Virginia as the fifty-sixth Parish in the Metropolis of New Jersey.
Although at that time, the idea seemed far-fetched,
the dedicated and faithful parishioners of Loudoun County knew in their hearts that "what is impossible with men is possible
with God." (Luke 18:27). Thus they commenced on building a Parish of faith knowing that success depended on the
Church and the Alpha and Omega of all life, our Savior Jesus Christ. On Sunday October 1, 2006, The Greek Orthodox Parish
of Loudoun County began worshipping on Sunday mornings at the Holiday Inn Executive Conference and Training Center in Dulles,
Virginia. By April 2007, the Parish will move into their own full-time facility in Dulles, Virginia where they will
celebrate Pascha for the first time. In less than a year, the Greek Orthodox community in Loudoun County, and in surrounding
counties, came together to not only form a Parish, but a community of families who are devoted to making this Parish a lasting
presence for generations to come.
